Schengen Insurance

Valid Schengen Insurance is a requirement for obtaining a Schengen Visa.

If you need a visa to Germany (not everyone does) one of the requisites is a health travel insurance.

Travel health insurance when going abroad is always a good idea, and Germany as well as all other Schengen countries make this an absolute requirement before issuing a visa.

There are certain stipulations regarding your Schengen Insurance, such as the following:

  • It must cover the duration of the requested visa (it can last longer of course, but not shorter!)
  • It must include medical evacuation/repatriation (minimum coverage of Euro 30.000 or US$37.500)
  • The insurance company must have a representative office in Europe
In practice it is fairly easy to arrange adequate insurance of this type online. Benefits usually include coverage for medical conditions up to $50,000 (30,000 Euros is the minimum required), prescription drugs, expenses, emergency medical evacuation and accidental death. Pre-existing medical conditions may be excluded.

By comparing policies you may get cover also for trip cancellation, interruption, and baggage loss or delay, for the same price.

You may also be able to vary your premium depending on the excess you are prepared to accept, i.e. the amount you are prepared to pay towards costs in the event of a claim. As with any insurance policy, it can pay to compare two or three quotations in order to get the best deal. It is also worth checking a company’s record of customer satisfaction before making your final decision.

By finding a reputable company with experience of health insurance plans to satisfy Schengen Visa requirements you will save yourself time and worry.

Even if you don't need a Germany visa, you should never travel without medical coverage !
