What to expect on Opening day/1st day of Oktoberfest

Hi,

I'm planning on going to Oktoberfest on September 18, the opening day of Oktoberfest.

I can only imagine that the fest will be packed since there is a ceremony for the first tapping. I only have the 18th and the 19th to be in Munich for Oktoberfest.

What can I expect that day as far as getting in the tents since I won't be able to make reservations for myself and 2 others. Thank you!

Hi Kathy,

If you're in Munich for the "Anstich" of the Oktoverfest, you should absolutely watch the Opening Procession.

After the procession walk with everyone else towards Theresienwiese. Usually you can still get into one of the tents, with exception of the Schottenhamel tent, where the actual Anstich takes place.

If you want to go early to the tents, keep in mind that there's no beer until noon and even then it might take up to one hour, until the waitress finally comes to your table with the full mass.
